Tigers beat White Sox, clinch playoff berth

A ten-year wait has ended.

The Detroit Tigers defied the odds and roared back to the postseason for the first time since 2014, by beating the Chicago White Sox Friday night in front of a sellout crowd at Comerica Park.

The Tigers clinched one of three wildcard spots in the American League, and will play in the best-of-three A.L. Wildcard Series next week.

The game capped an incredible second half of the season for Detroit. Soon after the All-Star break, the Tigers were well below the .500 mark and not expected to reach the playoffs. Since August 1, the Tigers went 34-17.

The game Friday night was also historic but for a different reason. The White Sox broke the modern season futility record with its 121st loss, surpassing the 120 losses of the 1962 New York Mets.

The Tigers close out the regular season on Saturday and Sunday in Detroit.
