Chatham-Kent will have some local representation at the FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Americas Tournament in November.
Chatham's Bridget Carleton has been chosen as one of 16 athletes selected to compete for Canada in Edmonton.
Canada's first match-up will be against Cuba on November 14. The Canadian basketball players will get a bit of a break before heading back onto the court on November 16 to face Puerto Rico. On the final day of the tournament, Canada will play the Dominican Republic.
“It’s always such an amazing experience when you get to have meaningful games played in Canada,” said Lisa Thomaidis, head coach of the Senior Women’s National Team. “With our road to Tokyo going through Edmonton, we couldn’t ask for anything more. We are excited to showcase the team that we have put in place for these games, and know that the quality of the competition and the athletes that will be on display will not disappoint.”
Carleton, who signed a deal with the Minnesota Lynx in August, will play guard at the tournament.
A couple of Carleton's teammates are also from southwestern Ontario. They include forward Miranda Ayim of London and guard Miah-Marie Langlois of Windsor.
According to a media release from Canada Basketball, 22 national teams will compete at the FIBA Women's Pre-Qualifying Tournaments, in hopes of qualifying for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2020.
