The Municipality of Chatham-Kent (CK) will host an education and training fair next month for residents looking to advance their education, develop new skills, or explore career pathways.
The fair will be held on November 3 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the John Bradley Convention Centre, located at 565 Richmond Street in Chatham.
The free event will bring together post-secondary institutions, training providers, apprenticeship programs, and employment services under one roof, said civic officials.
The municipality noted students, job seekers, people thinking about a career change, and anyone interested in learning new skills are welcome.
Organizers said those wishing to attend the fair can network; learn about certificates, diplomas, degrees, and apprenticeships; find out about funding and financial help for education and training; learn about careers that are in demand and training available in Chatham-Kent; get advice about career options and the skills needed for different jobs; and attend live discussions about financial aid, women in the skilled trades, and other topics.
"Education and skills development play a critical role in strengthening our workforce and creating opportunities for individuals to succeed," said Matt Keech, CK Manager, Employment and Social Services. "The Education and Training Fair provides a valuable opportunity for residents to connect directly with organizations that can help them achieve their education and career goals."
Kelly Bouwers from CK Jobs said the presentations are worthwhile attending.
"If you want to just stop and talk or watch a fireside chat, you can actually hear about people who are looking to go into the nursing pathway, if you're looking to go into the OYAP program (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) or just building your skills in a career trade," said Bouwers.
Keech said attendees will have a multitude of options to choose from.
"We're going to have Canada Border Services there, Armed Forces, Coast Guard, and the R.C.M.P. So, there is a lot of different, diverse pathways," Keech noted.
Keech also noted a special Women in Trades Panel will take place from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. featuring women who have built careers in the skilled trades. They will share their experiences, challenges, and advice for people who may be thinking about a career in the trades.
“I’m honoured to join the Women in Trades panel at the Education and Training Fair,” said panelist Laurin Padolina. “Education and training can create new opportunities and help people grow. Trying something new can be intimidating, but it can also lead to greater confidence, purpose and new possibilities.”
The municipality said fireside chats, including information about financial aid and other topics will be held between 3:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., the Women in Trades Panel will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the event wraps up with another fireside chat from 6:15 p.m. to 6:35 p.m.
