Local school furniture, books find new home abroad

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board (SCCDSB) is once again sending surplus furniture and books from local schools to support students abroad, this time in Honduras.

The SCCDSB announced on Friday afternoon the surplus desks, chairs, and books have been donated to Canadian Food for Children - Chatham-Kent and will soon be shipped to schools in Honduras.

“It is part of our Catholic identity to care for one another and help when we are in a position to give back,” said SCCDSB CEO Lisa Demers. “We are grateful these educational resources will find a new purpose in classrooms around the world, supporting students and enhancing their learning environments.”

Canadian Food for Children - Chatham-Kent has been collecting and sending food, clothing, medical and school supplies, and other needed items to the main warehouse in Mississauga for years.

The donations are then loaded into shipping containers and trucked to Halifax for shipment to their destination.

The registered charity has supported missions in Tanzania, Sierra Leone, El Salvador, and Zambia, to name just a few.

Canadian Food for Children was founded in Canada in the 1980s by Dr. Andrew Simone of Toronto, and his wife Joan, at the request of Mother Teresa.
