CKPS, OPP laid hundreds of charges over Thanksgiving weekend

The Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) took part in a national road safety campaign over the long weekend.

Operation Impact saw 163 charges laid on CKPS-patrolled roads alone.

"These results demonstrate the importance of continued proactive traffic enforcement throughout Chatham-Kent," said Staff Sergeant Jason Herder.

Multiple RIDE checkpoints were set up throughout the municipality from October 9 to October 12.

"The seven RIDE checks conducted over the long weekend, combined with targeted traffic enforcement, allowed our officers to identify and remove drivers who posed a risk to others," Herder added. "We appreciate the efforts of our members and the many drivers who made safe and responsible choices."

Operation Impact focused on the big four driving behaviours that put people and property at risk. This includes impaired driving, aggressive driving, distracted driving, and failing to properly use seatbelts.

On provincial roads, more than 9,800 charges were laid.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said that 4,924 tickets were handed out for speeding, 174 impaired driving charges were laid, 108 distracted driving tickets were written, and 506 motorists were caught not wearing seatbelts.

In Elgin and Chatham-Kent, those numbers sat at 65 speeding tickets written, 33 seatbelt charges laid, four impaired driving charges given, one distracted driving ticket handed out, and two stunt driving charges laid.

According to the numbers released from West Region OPP, this year's total charges laid were up 300 charges from last year, to 2,152 from last year's 1,832 charges.
