Gun call at Chatham high school leads to charges against a youth

A 16-year-old has been charged after a gun call near Chatham-Kent Secondary School.

Chatham-Kent (CK) police said the youth, who can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested at a home in Chatham in possession of a pellet gun.

Police noted students reported seeing a male pull what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband in the parking lot of Chatham-Kent Secondary School at approximately 9:31 a.m. on Wednesday.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School, King George Public School, and McNaughton Avenue Public School were placed under a hold and secure for a short time.

The youth was charged with two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and one count of pointing a firearm.

"There is currently no ongoing threat to the schools or the surrounding community," police said.

CK police is thanking the public for their patience and cooperation during the incident.
