Crews remain hard at work cleaning up following a fire at a Chatham-Kent ethanol plant this week.
Greenfield Global provided an update on Friday night, as cleanup efforts continue at the plant on Bloomfield Road following Wednesday morning's blaze.
The company said attention is directed to the nearby Thames River.
"Working together with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), remediation has expanded into the Thames River to minimize the impact on the river’s wildlife and ecosystem following the use of firefighting foam to safely extinguish the fire," read a statement from Greenfield Global. "Chatham-Kent city officials have confirmed there are no impacts to the community’s drinking water resources."
No one was hurt in the fire.
The fire was isolated to the facility's storage tank farm. The company says damage is isolated there and has not adversely affected distillation.
A lightning strike was believed to be the cause of the fire. Chatham-Kent fire officials say that there is no indication that air quality was affected in the area.
"Greenfield Global has retained environmental consultants to support and advise staff on all cleanup and remediation activities," read the statement. "The company is conducting a thorough onsite investigation to identify opportunities for continuous improvement once the cleanup activities are completed."
