A hearing regarding the Dresden landfill and waste processing facility scheduled for later this month has been delayed until November.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said the upcoming court date has been rescheduled from September 21 to November 17 because Chatham-Kent’s legal team needs more time to properly review the high volume of submitted documents.
The municipality also noted the Ministry of the Environment has confirmed that there will be an opportunity for community feedback through the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO) on the York1 proposal.
Municipal officials anticipate the community will have at least 45 days to provide comments. However, the estimated date of the feedback posting to the provincial ERO website is not yet known. They added information about the comment period will be shared with the community once it becomes available.
Findings from the municipality’s expert review will be made available to the public through the Defend Dresden Let’s Talk page as they become available.
The new November 17 hearing will determine if York1 needs local zoning approvals for the proposal and is not a final determination of whether the project can proceed.
York1 started the proceedings arguing that it does not require local zoning approvals. However, the municipality has countered by saying that current zoning for the site does not permit a landfill or a large-scale waste processing facility, maintaining zoning approvals are required.
