Residents of Mitchell's Bay fought long and hard for a change in their mailing addresses and they have finally won.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent says Canada Post has agreed to update the mailing place name used by residents of Mitchell’s Bay beginning in October.
Residents who currently use “Dover Centre” in their mailing address will instead use “Mitchell’s Bay”, according to the municipality. Municipal officials noted this will be the only change to their mailing address, adding that postal codes and all other address details will remain the same.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent was asked to reach out to Canada Post to change the mailing addresses in Mitchell's Bay 15 months ago.
“This change recognizes Mitchell’s Bay as the distinct and proud community that residents know it to be,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff. “We appreciate Canada Post working with the Municipality to provide residents with a mailing address that better reflects the place they call home.”
Administration said residents and businesses affected by the change will receive information directly from Canada Post in September explaining the change and outlining any actions customers may need to take.
“This may appear to be a small change, but community identity matters,” said Councillor Rhonda Jubenville. “Mitchell’s Bay residents are proud of their community, and it is important that their mailing address accurately represents where they live.”
According to the municipality, Canada Post will provide complimentary mail-forwarding service for one year to help ensure a smooth transition, adding that mail and parcels using the previous “Dover Centre” mailing place name will continue to reach customers during this period.
“We appreciate Canada Post working with the Municipality to make this change possible and helping make the transition as easy as possible for residents and businesses,” said Councillor Jamie McGrail. “Having Mitchell’s Bay reflected in their mailing address is a meaningful benefit for the community and reinforces the identity residents are proud to call their own.”
Residents and businesses are encouraged to update their mailing address with organizations, service providers, businesses, friends, and family when they receive official notification of the mailing change.
