The winner of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation's (CKHAF) latest 50/50 draw was caught completely off guard.
"I still can't believe this happened," Kristine Ellis said when she was informed of her $44,430 prize on Thursday.
According to CKHAF, the Thamesville resident is a long-time supporter of its 50/50 fundraisers.
"I've always supported the hospital 50/50s because it's local. You know the money is staying here and helping people in our own community," Ellis shared. "We've had family members cared for at the hospital, so you really appreciate how important that is."
Ellis purchased tickets multiple times throughout the 50/50 fundraiser, including on the night before the grand prize draw. Her winning ticket was purchased online, in May.
She hasn't decided how to spend her winnings yet, but said that a portion will be donated to an upcoming mission trip that's been planned by her church.
This year's spring 50/50 campaign was held in partnership with RetroFest. It allowed CKHAF staff and volunteers a chance to meet and connect with hundreds of community members who ultimately supported the fundraiser.
"Our community continues to show incredible support for local healthcare, and this campaign is another wonderful example of what we can accomplish together," said Christine Mitchell, CKHAF President and CEO. "Every ticket purchased helps strengthen healthcare close to home while giving supporters the opportunity to win a life-changing prize. We couldn't be happier for Kristine, and we're so grateful to everyone who helped make this year's Retro 50/50 such a success."
The second half of the $88,860 that was raised will go toward supporting the areas of greatest need at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance. This includes investment in vital medical equipment, innovative technology, and patient care initiatives.
