A newcomer to Chatham-Kent (CK) is looking to help her new community by joining the municipality's council.
Deb Martin, who moved to Chatham back in 2024, is running in Ward 8, hoping to be one of two councillors representing the southern part of Chatham.
She told CK News Today that she's long had an interest in politics but decided to run this time because of a few things she'd like to see improved.
"I can't sit back and complain about something if I'm not willing to put in the work. That's something that comes from my husband. He says a lot of people will complain, but they won't go out and make a difference," explained Martin.
Some of the issues that grabbed her attention were poor road conditions and messy recycling pickup.
If elected, Martin said her top priority would be to improve the municipality so that people who live here are proud of where they live.
"That means good roads, well kept parks, places for kids to play and be safe, attractive neighbourhoods, and having community events," she added.
Martin also wants to be an ear for the public, ensuring that no one feels ignored by the municipality. To help drive this point home, she plans to conduct a listening tour, visiting people across Chatham and listening to their concerns.
She added that anyone who votes for her will get someone who wants to improve CK now and for the future.
"I think I can be a strong voice in council and represent South Chatham well."
CK's election will be on October 26, 2026.
