Near crashes in Merlin result in impaired driving charge

An alleged impaired driver is lucky no one was hurt after being spotted swerving in and out of traffic.

Shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, Chatham-Kent (CK) police were called about a driver in Merlin who couldn't stay in their lane and had almost hit another vehicle and several motorcyclists.

Officers found the vehicle and pulled it over. The driver, a 52-year-old man, was arrested.

After being brought to CK police headquarters, he reportedly refused to give a breath sample.

The man was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance and failing or refusing to comply with a breath demand.

He's since been released from police custody with a future court date.
