CK council set to review renoviction by-law

Chatham-Kent (CK) council is taking the next steps to create a renoviction by-law.

A renoviction is when a landlord evicts tenants to renovate, usually re-renting the units at a higher price.

On Monday night, council will review the recommendations and by-law put together by staff.

The draft by-law would require landlords to obtain a license if repairs or renovations need the tenant to vacate the unit.

Owners who are granted a license would also need to make accommodations for the renters while the renovation or repair is being completed, or compensate them.

Councillor Marjorie Crew brought the idea before council at the beginning of the year, after tenants of Terrace 40 were told to vacate for necessary renovations.
