Breakthrough T1D Walk to take place in Chatham

A fundraising walk for Type 1 diabetes will take place in Chatham on Saturday, June 13.

The Breakthrough T1D Walk will take over Kingston Park at noon.

"It's a family fun activity where we bring together people, families, and supporters of Type 1 Diabetes," said walk coordinator Mandy Smith-Grant. "It's a fundraiser that's been going on in Canada for over 50 years, and we're really happy to host this event in Chatham."

In addition to the walk, there will be a BBQ by the Optimist Club of Chatham and a family fun zone put on the by the Lally Auto Group. The goal is to raise $10,000.

"A lot of the money does go towards research for a cure, but we also spend a lot of money on outreach, mental health supports, and bringing communities together, such as this (walk)," Smith-Grant said.

Registration opens at 11 a.m. and opening ceremonies are set for 11:45. Smith-Grant adds that the walk is about bringing the local T1D community together.

"While it’s nice to raise some money for this event, our main goal is to bring together the community," Smith-Grant said. "To celebrate people living with T1D, to let them know that they're not alone, and that you have a supportive community behind you."
