Strong winds fan fire, damage family home

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue (CKFR) believe strong winds spread flames from a vehicle to a family home near Charing Cross, causing extensive damage.

Emergency crews were called to a home on Charing Cross Road, just before 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

When firefighters arrived, the blaze had already caused part of the single-storey home's roof to collapse. According to officials, strong easterly winds caused the fire to move quickly, making it necessary to contain the fire from the outside and keep it from spreading to nearby structures and vehicles.

Power lines were found down at the scene, said CKFR. This required utility companies, such as electricity and gas, to attend the scene and ensure public safety.

Extensive damage was done to the house, though no dollar estimate has been released. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
