A special event is planned in downtown Chatham for International Women's Day.
A number of female-serving organizations have teamed up to march from the Civic Centre at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 8, to the Kiwanis Theatre, where there will be a special screening of a documentary "This Women's Work" from Sisters Strain at noon.
"It's a documentary feature film that we've been working on over the course of the year," said Karissa Strain. "We've been following over 60 women and female-led organizations and their contributions to the community. So it's kind of a celebration of this often unseen, unpaid work that women contribute."
The documentary was inspired by all the incredible women the sisters met when they moved back to Chatham-Kent.
"Last International Women's Day, we kind of launched it," said Kat Strain. "We invited women to come out to this event, and let us know who they are, what they do and see if they wanted to be a part. We kind of committed ourselves to following whoever wanted to participate for a year in their life."
The documentary takes a closer looks at the changing roles women's have.
"Gender roles in the household have changed, gender roles in the workplace have changed, and we just kind of wanted to dive in and see what does that look like. What are women doing in the workforce? What are they doing in their communities? And let's highlight that and celebrate it," said Karissa.
Kat and Karissa added that everyone is invited to this free event.
"We have requested some donations of menstrual products that we can give back to the community. It will be followed by a reception until about 3:00 p.m. in Studio One, where we'll have some light snacks and people can go and meet the women that they just saw on screen and learn more about the organizations," Karissa said.
