CK councillor looking to ask the MTO for Hwy. 40 improvements

A Chatham-Kent (CK) councillor is hoping to send a letter to the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to request improvements on a stretch of Highway 40 between Chatham and Wallaceburg.

At Monday night's meeting, councillor Rhonda Jubenville announced the notice of motion, citing the number of collisions that take place on that highway.

"It just seems that there is more and more accidents that are happening on 40 highway, and they seem targeted at the intersections of Countryview Line and Electric Line," Jubenville explained.

Since October 2025, there have been six collisions on Hwy. 40 in Chatham-Kent, with two taking place in February.

According to the CK councillor, farmers are also being affected by the provincial highway.

"I have also had conversations with farmers over the years, and they do find it difficult to cross over 40 highway, especially if they're in a tractor with implements like trailers behind them," Jubenville said. "If there's inclement weather or fog, they can't really see what's happening, so a lot of them are kind of taking a leap of faith crossing 40 highway and hoping for the best."

Jubenville is hoping to see improvements, including traffic signals on the road at the intersections of Electric Line, Oldfield Line, and Countryview Line.

Her motion will be discussed at the council meeting scheduled for March 9.
