The Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) has issued a warning following an increase in what's often called "Grandparent Scams."
Police allege that the scams, targeting older adults, have defrauded victims out of significant amounts of money.
The police force is currently investigating four scam incidents that were reported last week. In two of the cases, money was exchanged.
According to police, scammers are phoning victims and claiming to be a loved one in trouble who urgently needs money. The scam is meant to instill fear, confusion, and create pressure for secrecy and fast payments.
"When we observe an increase in incidents of this nature, it becomes important to remind and educate our community to help prevent similar situations from happening," said Cole Abbott, CKPS Detective.
Officers are reminding CK residents that they will never ask for money, bail payments, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers over the phone.
