Special weather statement in effect for a possible snowy Sunday

First, it was extreme cold, and now a likely snowy end to the weekend across southwestern Ontario.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the potential of heavy snow on Sunday through Monday morning.

"Lake enhancement may occur in some areas, which could lead to higher snowfall amounts," read the statement from Environment Canada.

Total snowfall amounts may vary from ten to 20 centimetres. Changes in the storm track may affect amounts.

The system is on the northern end of a massive winter storm that is expected to affect the majority of the U.S.

"It's a very, very large system," said Meteorologist Eric Thomlinson on Thursday. "It will intensify as it taps into that Gulf [of Mexico] moisture, and with all of that moisture that it's picking up, it has quite a large area of precipitation, and it's the northern edge that could impact us."
