Three individuals have been arrested after Sarnia police seized a weapon during a traffic stop.
On Friday morning, a white SUV was stopped after making a traffic mistake while traveling along Murphy Road, just south of Wiltshire Drive.
Police allege that as the car turned into a nearby parking lot, the front passenger was seen quickly tossing something toward the back of the SUV, while the person sitting in the rear seat slid down, apparently trying not to be noticed.
When the vehicle came to a stop, police identified the two women and man occupants. Both were already known to be wanted in connection with several outstanding court matters.
The trio was taken out of the vehicle and detained.
Police identified a modified baseball bat fitted with jagged metal pieces in the back seat.
It was later determined that the item tossed into the back seat was an open can of beer.
The driver of the SUV, a 48-year-old woman from Sarnia who also owned the vehicle, was issued tickets related to traffic and liquor violations.
A 31-year-old woman was also arrested and was held in custody due to previous warrants.
A 30-year-old man of Bluewater Line in Wallaceburg was also kept in custody. In addition to his existing legal issues, he now faces further allegations related to possessing a dangerous weapon and repeatedly failing to follow court-ordered conditions.
Both individuals were later ordered by the court to remain in custody.
