Murder charges laid in Walpole Island shooting

A 32-year-old Walpole Island First Nation man is charged in Lambton County's first homicide of the year.

The Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia confirmed Cody Roegiest is charged with second-degree murder, discharging a firearm with intent, and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Roegiest was arrested on New Year's Day after Lambton OPP and Walpole Island Police responded to a disturbance involving a firearm on Squirrel Island Road.

Officers located a 29-year-old suffering from apparent gun shot wounds, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time, police said one person was arrested without incident. However, since the initial news release, OPP have not provided any further details, including the names of the victim or accused.

The Ontario Court of Justice said Roegiest is scheduled to appear in Sarnia court again on Friday, January 9 for a bail hearing.
