CK first responders commended for life-saving rescue

A handful of police officers and emergency communications operators in Chatham-Kent (CK) were commended by the chief of police for their great work in saving a man's life.

Constables Cole Brigley, Steven Gagnon, Acting Sergeant Chris Reynolds, Sergeant Fraser Leontowicz, Emergency Communications Operators Brock Bechard, Camryn Dudley, McKenna Ladd, and Victoria Labadie were recognized by CK Police Chief Kirk Earley with a chief's commendation at the police services board meeting on Wednesday morning for saving a suicidal man in distress in Chatham on Canada Day.

Police said the man was hanging over the edge of the Lacroix Street bridge and was threatening to jump into the river below when officers arrived.

According to police, the man became overwhelmed with emotion, lost his grip on the bridge railing and fell, but was rescued by the officers.

"Without hesitation, the officers were able to take control of him physically, removing him from danger. Once safe and under apprehension, the man was transported to the local hospital, where they received the care that they desperately needed," said Chief Earley.

The chief also noted that the Emergency Communications Operators demonstrated "exceptional professionalism and focus," gathering essential information, relaying information to all emergency responders, which allowed for a quick response that played a "vital role" in the positive outcome of the attempted suicide.

Earley said the actions of eight first responders "exemplify the highest standards in terms of serving and protecting."

"Bravery, quick-thinking, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to the preservation of life have brought honour to themselves, the Chatham-Kent Police Service, and the community that they serve," the chief concluded.
