CK asked to stand with Jamaica after hurricane devastation

A greenhouse operation in Chatham is collecting donations to help those devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

Truly Green Farms is asking the community of Chatham-Kent for non-perishables, hygiene items, medical supplies, and essentials, such as blankets and towels.

Julia Rosa from Truly Green Farms told CK News Today it's important for the company and the community to assist its more than 80 seasonal employees from Jamaica who work at the Chatham greenhouse every year because they are an important part of the family and of the agricultural workforce in the region.

"We're hoping to get a big buy-in from the community. I think we also benefit from having them [seasonal workers] here. It's labour that we sometimes don't value, but we should because they bring food to our table, and right now it's our chance to give back to them," said Rosa.

Rosa said the need in Jamaica is urgent, and the campaign aims to help as many people as possible.

"We care about them, we care about their families, and in this time of need, we just want to give support," Rosa noted.

Rosa said supplies can be dropped off at Truly Green Farms at 162 Bloomfield Road in Chatham during business hours by ringing the doorbell, and they will be shipped directly to Jamaica through the Jamaican Liaison Services.

The campaign runs until November 20.

After hours, donors can contact the following Truly Green supervisors and leaders:

Bobby at 876-355-3483

Jermaine at 226-627-9610

Leighton at 876-792-2341

Marcus at 876-774-3077
