Over 100 people in Chatham-Kent (CK) took part in a grueling challenge for a good cause.
The third annual Chatham-Kent Rucksack March For Remembrance took place on Saturday, and saw participants walk 22 kilometres while carrying a 50-pound backpack.
Each did so in support of Wounded Warriors Canada, a non-profit organization that provides mental health support for veterans and first responders.
"A lot are fighting significant service-related battles, and I think the important thing is to raise awareness," said Josh Rose, a detective with the Chatham-Kent Police Service.
He was one of several police officers who took part in the event, serving as the group's captain.
Along with raising awareness, participants were encouraged to raise funds for Wounded Warriors Canada. The CK police team collected nearly $1,100.
So far, over $35,000 has been raised, with donations being collected until the end of November.
Dean Outhouse, co-organizer of the local march, told CK News Today that no other city has been able to raise as much.
"We're not the biggest city in Ontario, we're not the biggest city in Canada, but when it comes time, [Chatham] shows up and supports," he explained.
This year's total is also more than what was collected locally during the first two marches. In year one, around $10,000 was raised, while over $20,000 was collected in year two.
