Ceremony held to kickoff poppy campaign in Chatham

Legions across the country are starting their annual poppy campaigns.

Starting Friday and going until Remembrance Day, people can donate for a poppy to recognize the sacrifices all veterans have and will continue to make.

One of the Legions to hold a ceremony to kick off the campaign was Chatham's.

President Len Maynard told CK News Today that this is the one time every year that veterans are put in the forefront.

"For veterans, their families, and the needs and sacrifices that they made. This is our time and the world's time to stand up and say we're behind you," he explained.

The ceremony included raising the Legion and poppy flags in front of the Chatham Civic Centre.

Maynard explained that this is just one example of how the community comes together every year to support its veterans. He went on to say that no community in Canada does it better.

"This is the first place that I've ever come that when you go through a drive-through and [someone] sees the veteran's plate and the next thing I know, I go to pay for my coffee and it's already paid for," he added.

Showing his support at the ceremony was Chatham-Kent (CK) Councillor Brock McGregor. He shared his thoughts on the importance of the poppy campaign and the days leading up to Remembrance Day.

"It's a really important [time] to listen to stories from veterans and service members and understand the sacrifices that were made so we can enjoy the country we have today."

People can get a poppy at different locations across Chatham. This includes grocery stores, local businesses, and more. Maynard noted that anyone having trouble finding a poppy can get one at the Legion.

All funds raised in Chatham will be put into a fund that is only available to veterans and their families. Maynard shared that in recent years, the fund was used to help two homeless veterans get back on their feet.
