The mayor of Chatham-Kent says he has reached out "directly" to senior leadership at Enbridge Gas to try and keep their office in Chatham.
Enbridge Gas is considering closing its office in Chatham.
Mayor Darrin Canniff said he will be working with them to better understand the reasons behind the potential relocation of some or all Enbridge workers in Chatham to London and to explore "every possible avenue" to keep them in Chatham.
"Enbridge has been part of our community for over a century, contributing not only through employment and investment, but also through meaningful support of local initiatives and organizations," said the mayor in a social media post late on Thursday. "Their presence has been, and still is, a valued part of Chatham-Kent’s growth and success."
Canniff added that both he and Council have been working with the leadership team at Enbridge since the merger between Enbridge Gas Distribution and Union Gas in 2019 to preserve a strong presence in Chatham-Kent.
"Our goal is to ensure that Enbridge knows how much they mean to our community and to express our strong desire to see their continued presence in Chatham-Kent," he said.
The mayor emphasized the fact that nothing has been finalized yet and both he and Council "will fight" to keep the Enbridge legacy alive in Chatham-Kent for years to come.
