OPP officer cleared in Walpole Island shooting investigation

Ontario's police watchdog has cleared a provincial police officer in connection with a shooting incident on Walpole Island First Nation.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the shooting took place on March 2, 2025.

It started with a man threatening people with a gun at a home near Dan Shab Road and Chiefs Road North. Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to scene alongside officers from Walpole Island First Nations Police (WIFNP).

The man took off in an SUV when police tried to intervene, the SIU said. An officer fired shots at the SUV when the man tried to charge a roadblock.

No one was injured.

SIU Director Joseph Martino determined that the officer who fired the shots did not commit a criminal offence.

"At the time [the officer] fired his weapon, [he] did so believing it was necessary to protect another officer," Martino said.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
