CK mayor braces for Trump's "Stupid Day" tariffs

People across the globe are waiting to see what new tariffs are set to be announced by the United States government.

President Donald Trump is expected to introduce these tariffs on Wednesday or what he's calling 'Liberation Day.'

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is calling it 'Termination Day,' while Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff has settled on a different nickname.

"It's kind of more like 'Stupid Day,'" he said.

Canniff shared his thoughts with CK Mornings with Chris, Allanah & Matt on 94.3 CKSY.

He said there are a lot of different tariffs the U.S. can impose that could severely hurt Chatham-Kent.

"We have about 6,000 auto workers in the Chatham-Kent area, we have greenhouses, we have the aluminum plant, we have all these things that'll be significantly impacted," added Canniff.

He is hoping for at least a deferral of the tariffs so that more negotiations can take place and ultimately end the ongoing trade war.

"Let's make some common sense between Canada and the United States. We're best friends, we were best friends until recently," said Canniff. "We should be working on positive things... this is big steps backwards."
