Chatham Hope Haven opening doors overnight to help homeless

Homeless people in Chatham now have a way to get away from the cold weather overnight.

Chatham Hope Haven is opening its doors from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. every night from now until at least the end of February.

Over past few years, the shelter would do this whenever there was an extreme weather. Loree Bailey, Hope Haven's General Manager, told CK News Today they couldn't afford to wait due to how many homeless people there are now.

"Someone does not need extreme weather to die from exposure and I am truly fearful that is going to happen this year," she said.

Bailey explained she's been told there are around 10 encampments and roughly 200 people living on the streets in Chatham. Because of these numbers, she knew her organization needed to help even more.

"I would not want anyone to expect that this will resolve the issue of visible encampments. It will not. That is housing for some folks," added Bailey.

People who visit during 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. will have an opportunity to shower, wash their clothes, and enjoy a hot meal.

As of right now, Hope Haven does not have enough funds to cover the added expenses of being open an additional 12 hours a day. Before, they would open their doors from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. with a lot of work being done by volunteers.

Bailey explained they're asking for $65,000 from CK council. This request is expected to be discussed at the next meeting on December 9, 2024.

"I have confidence in our council, we've talked more in the past 12 months about homelessness then we ever have and they've shown that there as supportive as they can be," said Bailey.

The shelter has also been receiving fewerdonations than usual due to the Canada Post strike as many people send cheques in the mail.

Bailey is hoping people will instead stop by in person during the day, from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. They can also e-transfer money to the email chathamhopehaven@gmail.com.
