Police encourage safe driving practices during winter weather

With the weather turning wintery CK police are encouraging drivers to take extra care on the roads.

On Thursday, officers were called out to eight separate collisions within the municipality.

Police are offering a few tips to keep CK residents safe on the roads:

  • Slow down - "Most winter collisions occur because drivers are going too fast for the road conditions," police said. "Reduce your speed and drive cautiously to maintain control of your vehicle."

  • Avoid cruise control - Do not use cruise control on wet, snowy, or icy pavement, as it can reduce reaction time and vehicle control.

  • Steer gently - Hard braking or quick acceleration may cause a vehicle to skid. "If you find yourself skidding, steer in the direction you want to go," police advise. "Remain calm and avoid any sudden or jerky movements."

  • Maintain distance - It takes longer to stop on slippery or foggy roads. Extra space between vehicles will allow for a safe stopping distance and help prevent rear-end collisions.
