Accidental fire in Chatham burns resident, causes $100K in damage

A fire at a multi-unit complex in Chatham has caused $100,000 in damage.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue reported that the blaze broke out in Unit 4 at 153 Timmins Crescent in Chatham on Wednesday at around 8:30 p.m.

Fire officials have listed the fire as accidental.

CK Fire Public Educator Whitney Burk said the resident suffered smoke inhalation and burned a hand while trying to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher before leaving the unit.

Burk added that CK paramedics treated the victim at the scene before transporting them to the hospital for further care.

Officials said flames were visible from the second-floor window of the residential complex when firefighters arrived and the "prompt actions" of crews led to the fire being contained within the bedroom.

The flames caused smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the unit, but the neighbouring units weren't damaged, according to CK Fire.

"Firefighters implemented efficient tactics to suppress the flames, minimizing damage and ensuring the safety of other residents," said Assistant Chief Dan Parent.

Burk noted the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified.
