Fraud warning issued by CK police

The public is being warned by Chatham-Kent police not to fall for individuals posing as bail bondsmen.

Police said bail bondsmen do not exist in Canada.

Police said they have investigated four incidents since Tuesday involving individuals posing as bail bondsmen.

Investigators reported the "scammers" have contacted citizens, claiming that their grandchild is in jail, and demanded money for their release.

Police warn that victims are told by the fraudsters to give the cash to a courier when they arrive at their home. The victims are also provided with a code to make the transaction seem legitimate, according to police.

"Please be aware that no Canadian court and no police service will ever engage in this practice. Bail bondsmen do not exist in Canada," CK police said. "If you receive a call stating that your grandchild or any relative is in jail and requires bail money for their release, it is a scam."

Police urge the public to stay vigilant, not provide any personal information or money if they receive such a call, and report the incident.

"Your awareness can help prevent others from falling victim to these fraudulent schemes," noted police.
