Chatham-Kent Council is set to meet on Tuesday to go over the 2025 municipal budget.
The proposed budget was released earlier this month by the municipality, however, this will be the first opportunity for the mayor and the councillors to add or remove any items.
Currently, homeowners are looking at a 5.96 per cent tax increase which means they would be paying an additional $119 per $100,000 of their property's current assessed value if that is approved.
Originally, the budget was looking at a 8.17 per cent increase when CK's council approved the multi-year budget for 2024 to 2027. That number jumped to around 9.4 per cent during the year, however, municipal staff members have been able to lower it to the current 5.96 per cent.
Councillor Brock McGregor, who also sits as chair of the Budget Committee, previously told CK News Today there is a good chance this number will change as council does a deep dive into the budget.
Residents were previously given a chance to ask questions about the budget through two online information sessions held last week by the municipality. Several of the questions were around the proposed community hub project, which municipal staff have stated several times will have no impact on the budget.
Tuesday's meeting will get underway at 6 p.m. Several additional meetings have been scheduled if council needs additional time to review the budget. This includes potentially meeting on Wednesday (November 27), Thursday (November 28), December 3, and December 4.
