Remembrance Day honoured in Chatham

Downtown Chatham was filled Monday morning with people looking to remember those who've fought for our freedom.

Remembrance Day was celebrated across Canada for the 113th time, with the Chatham Legion holding a ceremony at the community's cenotaph.

Names of past and present veterans were read out loud, while wreaths were placed at the bottom of the cenotaph.

One of those in attendance was Karl Ryckman, who served with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1950 to 1956.

"I'm pleased to see this many people come out. I thought that the weather may drive them away but it didn't," he said.

During his service, Ryckman worked as a stoker on the HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Huron. He was on the HMCS Huron when it was dispatched to fight in the Korean War.

To this day, the 93-year-old still connects with some of his fellow sailors.

"We've been losing one right after the other, everybody is getting too old I guess," Ryckman added.

Overall, Ryckman believes Chatham-Kent is doing a good job of remembering and honouring all veterans. He and his family also shared their gratitude for the new mural on the Chatham Legion's building and the artwork done on the crosswalk near the cenotaph.
