Hazmat team called in to help clear oily situation in Tilbury

Chatham-Kent firefighters got some help from a Windsor Hazmat team after some digging at a Tilbury residence uncovered an oil-type substance underground.

Chatham-Kent fire officials said local firefighters were called to the scene first.

They responded to the property just after 1 p.m. Wednesday after the substance was discovered at 67 Queen Street South in Tilbury. Fire officials said because of the "nature of this unusual call," firefighters from Station #19 in Tilbury were also supported by fire chiefs from headquarters and a Windsor Hazmat team.

That hazmat team was able to determine that the substance was "low hazard," so the homeowner and contractor were able to clean it up themselves.

Fire Chief Chris Case said they are thankful to the team from Windsor for their assistance and that officials also appreciate the support of the community as a section of the road was closed while the investigation was ongoing.

Residents who live in the area also received visits from firefighters to reassure them that there was no risk to the general public.
