Six hour stand off in Newbury ends peacefully

Two people were arrested following a threat complaint that led to a standoff in Newbury.

Middlesex Ontario Provincial Police were called to an address on Broadway Street around 3:16 p.m. on Wednesday.

When officers arrived, the suspect entered the residence and refused to leave.

The OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), Emergency Response Team (ERT), Crisis Negotiators, and the Canine Unit were called in to help.

A 39-year-old man was Newbury was eventually arrested and charged with two counts of uttering threats, and one count of possession of a weapon.

Broadway St. and James St. were closed as a precaution approximately six hours. Police say there was no threat to public safety, and no one was hurt.

A second individual was arrested, but was released unconditionally from police custody.

The OPP would like to thank members of the public for their patience while officers dealt with this incident.
