Weapons charges laid after McNaughton Ave. E. standoff

A 55-year-old Chatham man is facing a pair of charges and no injuries were reported after a police standoff at a Chatham residence Wednesday afternoon.

Chatham-Kent police said they were called to a home on McNaughton Avenue East in Chatham shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday for a residential panic alarm.

When officers arrived, they found a man inside who was holding a shotgun.

Officers then took cover and secured the surrounding area, negotiating with the man until they were able to successfully persuade him to hand over the gun and leave the residence.

Police said their conversation with the man eventually led to a peaceful resolution, adding that further investigation showed the man was intoxicated by drugs, which led him to believe that there were other people inside the home who wanted to hurt him.

After officers arrested the man, they searched the home for any additional firearms that may have been present.

A 55-year-old Chatham man was charged with careless storage of a firearm and possession of a firearm at an unauthorized place and was later released with conditions and a future court date.
