Employees who watch Canada's borders have accepted a new collective bargaining agreement.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and Customs and Immigration Union (CIU) reported on Thursday that members working for the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) have overwhelmingly ratified a new contract.
It expires on June 20, 2026.
"We celebrate our members who showed unwavering commitment and solidarity to reach the best possible contract for workers," said PSAC National President Sharon DeSousa. "This is a well-deserved victory for our members at CBSA who safeguard our nation’s borders and ensure the safety and security of all Canadians."
CIU National President Mark Weber added that the perseverance of members helped make a new contract possible.
"We would not have achieved this agreement without the strength and support shown by thousands of members across the country who took action to support our bargaining team," said Weber.
Among the agreement's highlights are a total 14.8 per cent wage increase throughout the pact, retroactive to June 2022. There is also a $2,500 one-time lump sum payment upon ratification.
Other terms include an increase in shift and weekend premiums from $2 to $2.25 per hour, reimbursement for costs of medical certificates up to $35, and annual allowances.
The union will meet with the Treasury Board to sign the contract. The board and CBSA have 180 days from the date of signing to raise wages according to the agreement, as well as provide any retroactive pay.
