Blenheim community fountain targeted by vandals again

Vandals have struck again at the Talbot Trail Place fountain in Blenheim.

The Rotary Club of Blenheim is reporting that someone poured what looked like liquid soap into the fountain causing the water to foam.

The vandalism happened early Sunday evening at the park on John Street West.

"The pumps within the fountain system are not designed to handle this soap and foam, and are easily damaged from this," said the club. "In addition, the chemicals needed to counteract the soap and foaming are expensive and our volunteers were forced to take time away from their families and their Sunday evening dinner to deal with this situation."

The Rotary Club noted they view this as an act of vandalism to the community park and are looking for the unknown individual responsible for "this selfish and irresponsible act."

They also said they will urge Chatham-Kent police to lay charges.

The park's surveillance system shows what appears to be a female walking past the fountain and pouring something in the water immediately before the foaming started.

The Rotary Club of Blenheim is urging anyone who can identify the person to report the name to park staff or send the name via private message.

Talbot Trail Place is not a municipality-owned park, it's a community park that was developed and is maintained by community volunteers and community donations.

The park's fountain was also targeted and filled with dish soap a few times in 2019.

The park's manager, Ron Allingham, said at the time several youth poured dish soap into the fountain overnight and the bubbles foamed several feet in the air.

He said that incident took several hours to clean up because the fountain had to be closed, drained, and refilled.
