An event in which high school students put on a murder trial returns to Windsor after a five-year absence.
The Ontario Justice Education Network is sponsoring the 2024 Southwest Region Mock Trial for High School Students on Monday at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
This is the first time since 2019 that the event will take place in a live, in-person setting.
Students from St. Anne Catholic High School in Lakeshore, Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School in Leamington, and Ursuline College in Chatham are among those participating.
The purpose of the event is to give students the experience of a courtroom, in a mock case in which the "accused" is on trial for second-degree murder.
Each student team is assisted by local lawyers who are volunteering their time as coaches, as well as by law students from the University of Windsor.
Three "trials" are set for Monday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The Ontario Justice Education Network is a non-profit organization based in Toronto. Its mission, according to its website, is to promote "understanding, education, and dialogue to support a responsive and inclusive justice system."
