Mortar round forces road closure in Leamington

A road in Leamington has reopened after being closed for much of Tuesday due to the presence of a mortar round.

Ontario Provincial Police were called around 10:30 a.m. to Deer Run Road between Mersea Road 21 and Mersea Road 19.

Constable Steven Duguay told WindsorNewsToday.ca that the incident was reported as a traffic hazard.

The road was closed as a precaution until the Department of Defence arrived from CFB Borden to retrieve the item, which turned out to be a mortar round dating to the early 1950s.

Duguay said the road was reopened around 4:45 p.m.
