Chatham man charged with assault after firearms call

A call for help from a distraught woman in Chatham led to a sizeable police presence and an arrest on Wednesday.

Chatham-Kent police said they were called to a residence on Sheldon Avenue just after 7:45 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a distraught woman calling for help from a second-floor window.

Police were also told that there was a man inside the residence with a gun.

When officers arrived, they were able to get the woman out to safety and successfully convinced the man to come out of the residence on his own.

He was arrested peacefully and police later recovered a black replica handgun.

Officers said their investigation showed that the man and the woman had been arguing when things escalated to the point where the woman was assaulted.

The 30-year-old man police arrested was charged with assault and he was taken to police headquarters before he was later released with conditions and a future court date.
