Mental health video featuring Maroons launches

Players from the Chatham Maroons star in a new video promoting the Be Safe app for mental health.

"When we were approached by the Mental Health Table to help promote the Be Safe app, without delay we agreed to be part of this amazing opportunity," said Maroons Assistant Coach and Assistant Manager Kent Hamilton. "This app will be so beneficial, and we are truly appreciative that we are able to be part of something so valuable."

The video shows players suggesting the app to one another when they notice a teammate feeling down or acting out angrily.

"Be Safe isn't just a tool; it's a vital ally, providing essential support for the general youth population and even for these young athletes," said Cathy DeBresser-Knowler, Public Health Educator with CK Public Health, and Mental Health Table facilitator. "From managing academics and excelling in hockey to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, navigating normal teenage challenges, and facing stressors like living far from home with a billet family, Be Safe is there for it all.”

DeBresser-Knowler added that the partnership with the Maroons should help break down the stigma around youth mental health.

"A massive shoutout to them for their immediate commitment to our mental health initiative, showcasing exceptional dedication from both players and coaching staff. They exceeded our expectations, crafting a powerful commercial for the Be Safe app,” she said.

The initiative was implemented in the Chatham-Kent region in May 2023.

Be Safe is a free mobile app meant for people aged 12-20 that offers help when they need it. The tool allows a person in crisis to connect to local, up-to-date, mental health resources quickly and easily.

It can also be used to develop an individualized safety plan and help users know what to expect if they call a crisis line or go to the hospital. It even lets someone who may be struggling know what their rights are when they reach out for support.

The app is free to both apple and android users and can be downloaded here.

Funding for the app in Chatham-Kent is by Women United, an affinity group of the United Way of Chatham-Kent.
