Chatham-Kent PUC approves water and wastewater rate increase for 2024

Chatham-Kent’s public utilities commission has approved an increase to its water and wastewater rates for 2024.

The yearly increase for an average household of four is $31.92 per year for both water and wastewater.

"The Chatham-Kent PUC is required under the Municipal Act to pass a bylaw to impose fees or charges related to water and wastewater systems," said General Manager Darren Galbraith during a virtual meeting Thursday. "This bylaw is brought forward every year to set the water and wastewater rates for the year."

The hikes are four cents per cubic metre for water consumption, and five cents per cubic metre for wastewater.

The fees cover the transportation of the wastewater from homes to the Sewage Treatment Plant through the sanitary sewer pipe system and the treatment of sewage so that it meets environmental requirements before it's released into the environment.

The water/wastewater rate hike was approved at the CK PUC monthly meeting on Thursday.
