Abandoned house fire in Wheatley

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue says damage from a house fire in Wheatley is pegged at $50,000.

Fire officials said fire crews were dispatched to 21104 Erie Street South in Wheatley Thursday night just after 11 p.m.

CK Fire spokesperson Whitney Burk said the cause is undetermined.

Burk said the abandoned house was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived and crews had to take a defensive approach to extinguish the flames.

She noted an excavator was also brought to the scene to assist.

No injuries were reported.
