OPP release Festive RIDE Campaign numbers

The OPP have released the final numbers for the 2023/24 Festive RIDE Campaign.

The campaign ran from November 16, 2023 until January 1, 2024. In that time, West Region OPP detachments conducted 2,446 impaired driving checkpoints throughout the region. That's well up from the 1,804 conducted in the 2022/23 campaign.

This year, there were 353 impaired driving charges laid, compared to 278 last year. Fifty-five warn range suspensions were issued compared to 35 the previous year. Police saw a total of 13,197 vehicles pass through the RIDE checkpoints this year.

"West Region OPP will continue efforts to get impaired drivers off the road beyond the holiday season and throughout the year," said Inspector Mike McConnell, West Region Traffic and Marine Manager. "Drivers can expect to see RIDE checkpoints in their area at any time. Impaired driving is one of the leading causes of death, injury and property damage on Ontario roadways and it's entirely preventable. If you plan to drink or take drugs, use a designated driver, a taxi or a rideshare service to get home safely."
