Rollover crash claims the life of Blenheim teen

A 17-year-old from Blenheim has died and three other teens were taken to the hospital after a rollover crash just outside of Blenheim.

Chatham-Kent police said crews were called to the scene on Allison Line between Charing Cross Road and Erieau Road at around 9:45 p.m. Thursday after a vehicle with four people inside rolled over several times before ending up on its roof.

Police said their initial investigation shows the driver lost control of the vehicle while heading northeast on Allison Line.

A 16-year-old girl and two 17-year-old girls were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries while a 17-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

CK police said their investigation is ongoing and the name of the girl who died will not be released at this time out of respect for the family's privacy.

CK News Today has learned that the girl who died was a student at Blenheim District High School.

Director of Education at the Lambton-Kent District School Board John Howitt said grief counselling and other mental health supports are already at the school and available to students.

"Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends, and school community," Howitt told CK News Today in a statement on Friday morning.

Help is also available through the school board website to help students overcome mental health, social, emotional, behavioural, and academic barriers to learning and to promote positive mental health and well-being.

If a student is experiencing issues that are affecting their school experience or general well-being, mental health professionals can help them to find solutions and to make a plan, according to the school board.

The Chatham-Kent Police Traffic Management Unit has taken over the investigation and anyone with information that could help with the investigation is asked to contact Constable Kristen Charron at kristenc@chatham-kent.ca or 519-355-1092.
