Cyclist suffers life-threatening injuries in collision in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are investigating a serious crash in Chatham that sent a cyclist to a London hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said emergency crews responded to the collision at McFarlane Avenue and Beth Crescent in Chatham just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after receiving "numerous 911 calls."

Officers said their investigation showed that the cyclist was heading westbound on McFarlane Ave. when a vehicle that was heading south on Melrose Drive went into the intersection and started turning left, hitting the cyclist in the process.

Police said some civilians at the scene tried to free the cyclist from under the front of the vehicle after the collision, but while they were trying to get the cyclist out, the vehicle moved forward, "further trapping and injuring the cyclist."

Officers said the cyclist was taken to a hospital in London with life-threatening injuries and the driver of the vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

At this point, police are not releasing the names of anyone involved.

The crash is still under investigation and anyone with information should contact police or Crime Stoppers.
