Don't be alarmed if you see some big kids out trick-or-treating in Chatham-Kent this Hallowe'en.
"Basically students from UCC (Ursuline College Chatham) will go around collecting canned goods, trick-or-treating for them, and then bringing them to Outreach for Hunger, just to help out in the community," said student Norah Lucier.
Over 200 high school students and volunteers will be out in four different communities for Lancers Scare Hunger.
"We're trying to get to almost all main roads in Chatham, and we have about 60 routes for Chatham," said Lucier. "Then we'll have Blenheim, Tilbury, and Ridgetown also covered for a few roads in there. We're really trying to cover all the houses that we can."
The students and volunteers will be out from about 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. and they will be wearing name tags to identify them.
This is the 16th year for Lancers Scare Hunger, and is student's Arwen Martin's first year participating.
"I just wanted to be a part of the experience of trick-or-treating with a purpose so that way we can help everyone in our community while still having a fun night out," Martin said.
Lucier said in the past they have collected a lot of donations to help stock the shelves at Outreach heading into the busy Christmas season.
"We've been able to fill all of our main hallway, all the way down on both sides and a big pyramid in the middle full of food," she said.
Anyone who will not be at home on Halloween but who wants to donate, can leave items on their front porch, with a note that says 'UCC' or 'donation' so that the students know they can collect it. Donations can also be dropped off at Chatham Outreach for Hunger.
Staff at Handy Bros. Home Comfort will once again help the students collect and deliver the donations to the food bank.
