One dead, four sent to hospital after fire in Chatham

The Office of the Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate a fire at a multi-unit home on St. George Street in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent fire officials said crews from Station 1 and Station 2 in Chatham were called to the scene at 24 St. George Street just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Paramedics took four people to the hospital and one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

CK Victim Services was also at the scene providing assistance to people affected by the fire and fire crews are scheduled to return to the area to conduct an "After the Fire Reassurance Campaign."

CK Fire Assistant Chief Adam Walters said they will be speaking with neighbours about fire safety and checking alarms, adding that their "thoughts are with the families and the entire community following this loss."

Chatham-Kent fire and Chatham-Kent police were still at the scene as of noon on Wednesday and the Office of the Fire Marshal was called in to help with the investigation.
